Limits of thermoelectric performance with a bounded transport distribution

چکیده
With the goal of maximizing thermoelectric (TE) figure merit $ZT$, Mahan and Sofo [Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U.S.A. 93, 7436 (1996)] found that optimal transport distribution (TD) is a delta function. Materials, however, have TDs appear to always be finite non-diverging. Motivated by this observation, study focuses on deriving what bounded TD, which determined boxcar function for $ZT$ Heaviside power factor. From these upper limits factor are obtained; maximum scales with $\Sigma_{\rm max} T /\kappa_l$, where max}$ TD magnitude $\kappa_l$ lattice thermal conductivity. These results help establish practical performance TE materials provide target guide band/scattering engineering strategies.

Coefficient of Performance Optimization of a Single Stage Thermoelectric Cooler
In thermoelectric coolers (TECs) applied external voltage potential is generated to a temperature difference based on the Peltier effect. Main and basic structure of TECs is in the form of single stage device. Due to the low efficiency, especially low coefficient of performance (COP) of thermoelectric coolers, optimal design of geometrical parameters of such devices is vital. For this purpose, ...

Thermoelectric materials which can convert energies directly between heat and electricity are used for solid state cooling and power generation. There is a big challenge to improve the efficiency of energy conversion which can be characterized by the figure of merit (ZT). In the past two decades, the introduction of nanostructures into bulk materials was believed to possibly enhance ZT. Nanocom...
متن کاملThermoelectric Transport in a ZrN/ScN Superlattice
Metal/semiconductor superlattices have the potential for a high thermoelectric figure of merit. The thermopower of these structures can be enhanced by controlling the barrier height using high-energy electron filtering. In addition, phonon scattering at interfaces can reduce the lattice contribution to the thermal conductivity. In this paper, we present theoretical and experimental studies of t...
متن کاملThermoelectric Transport in Nanoscale Materials
Measurements of thermoelectric transport coefficients yield important information regarding fundamental properties of a system in addition to the information supplied from the electronic transport measurements. In this thesis we report gate dependent and temperature dependent conductance (G) and thermoelectric power (TEP) measurements made in three different basic nanomaterials: single-walled n...
متن کاملThermoelectric transport in billiard systems
We discuss the thermoelectric (TE) transport in billiard systems of interacting particles, coupled to stochastic particle reservoirs. Recently in [1], analytical exact expressions for the TE transport of noninteracting gases of polyatomic molecules were obtained, and a novel microscopic mechanism for the increase of thermoelectric efficiency described. After briefly reviewing the derivation of ...
